When Jennifer Kaylor began volunteering with school-related groups and youth ministries on the Waccamaw Neck several years ago, she had no idea she would one day serve as executive director for Students in the Word, a 501(c)3 Christian released-time Bible education program located in Pawleys Island.

The organization has been offering classes to students in grades 7-12 since 2011. Under released-time education, students are permitted to enroll in an elective class that meets during school hours at nearby churches for the purpose of Christian Bible study and discipleship. Prior to Kaylor’s new role, the Board of Directors had been providing stewardship, oversight, fundraising, planning, policymaking, and more.

Upon naming Kaylor to this new role, Percy Strickland, board chair for Students in the Word, said, “It was obvious to me that we needed a strong leader to build on the successful work of SITW and to shepherd its impact for the next generation. Jennifer’s passion in the classroom and competency as a leader made our choice clear. We are so thankful for her and her leadership.”

This is the third year that Kaylor has been teaching the two SITW middle school classes at Waccamaw Middle and one high school class at Waccamaw High. Students receive transcript credit and a recorded grade for the class. SITW provides all transportation to and from the schools and local churches where the students meet. Because SITW is a Christian organization, and, therefore receives no monetary support from the Georgetown County School District, SITW is funded through the generosity of local churches, businesses and donations from individuals and fundraisers.

In addition to her current role as teacher, Kaylor has now assumed the day-to-day responsibilities of executive director. “I am so passionate about Students in the Word and what this ministry does for youth in our community. It’s a privilege to come alongside high school and middle school students for a season, and disciple them in their growing relationship with Christ,” she said. “As Executive Director, I look forward to serving this ministry more fully and helping it to advance its mission, which is to provide an opportunity for public school students to hear the word of Jesus Christ, to come into relationship with Jesus Christ, and to become disciples of Jesus Christ.”

Kaylor is married to Kevin, a financial advisor with Wells Fargo Advisors, and they have three children. She has a business degree from Wake Forest University and a degree in Interior Design from East Tennessee State University. She has volunteered in the Pawleys Island community over the years, is a founding member and treasurer of the Parent-Teacher organization at Waccamaw Intermediate School, former treasurer of the Waccamaw High School WAVE PTSA board, and served various roles in Children’s, Youth and Adult Ministries at All Saints Church where she is a member.

Regarding SITW under her leadership, Kaylor is “excited about the future of this ministry, the growth we anticipate, and the deep impact we can continue to have on the lives of students.”
