The middle and high school anglers of the Student Angler League Tournament Trail weathered a forecast with a double-digit temperature drop and challenging north winds in the fifth event of the year. Nevertheless, the student anglers, as always, came through at weigh-in March 16 at Carroll A. Campbell Marine Complex in Georgetown.
High School Bass Division was won by Waccamaw’s Wade Kelly and Tucker Caines with five fish at 11.54 pounds. Georgetown’s Andrew Ackerman and Jeremy Owens took second with five fish at 9 pounds. Third was Conway’s Austin Winburn and Chandler Brown with five fish at 6.65 pounds.
It was a second consecutive tournament dominated by the Conway High and Whittemore Park Middle, who took first in three of the four divisions.
Middle School Redfish Division was won by Donavan Harris (Conway Middle) and Wyatt Moore (Whittemore Park Middle) with two fish at 5.08 pounds. They also took the Big Fish title at 3.40 pounds. Fisher Gallup, who attends the Waccamaw Intermediate, finished second with one fish at 1.50 pounds.
High School Redfish Division was won Ashton Rouhselang (Conway Middle) and Lance Cooper (Conway High) with two fish at 6.62 pounds plus a big fish of 3.30 pounds. Second went to Carolina Forest’s Christa Edmonds with two fish at 6.03 pounds. Third place was Andrew’s Noah Payne and Kadyn Kellahan with one fish at 1.70 pounds.
Middle School Bass Division was won by Conway Middle’s Mason Hardee and Will Hardee-McGuirt with five fish at 9.94 pounds. The Big Fish of 2.73 pounds was landed by Wilson Grant of Rosemary Middle. Loris Middle’s Gavin Porter took second with five fish at 8.26 pounds. Third place went to Conway Middle’s Cody Wilder and Dalton Williams with four fish at 6.12 pounds.
Since every tournament is like a championship, the anglers won $1300 in gift cards plus, during the raffle where everyone wins, over $1000 in retail value of items were given to the participants. The trial winners is based on the total weight of the best 4 of 6 bags and each of the four divisions champions will receive a donated rod and reel combo from LEWS.
