In one week, some of South Carolina’s best high school baseball teams will arrive in Georgetown for the 29th Annual International Paper Baseball Classic.
The tournament starts on Feb. 28 at Mike Johnson Park and ends with the championship game on March 3.
Seven of the eight teams participating in the tournament made the district tournament. Georgetown High was the only team to miss the district playoffs in 2018.
The field featured two state champions; Bishop England, the 2018 3A state champion, and Chapin, the 2018 4A state champion. Boiling Springs, Riverside, Blythewood and Summerville all reached a 5A district tournament and Riverside made the Upper State tournament. A.C. Flora earned a bid to the 4A Lower State playoffs.
Three of the eight teams are ranked first in their class in the South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association poll (Boiling Springs in 5A, A.C. Flora in 4A and Bishop England in 3A) while Blythewood, Chapin and Riverside are all ranked top 10 in the 5A preseason poll.
In 2018, Bishop England defeated Boiling Springs in the championship game and BE’s Geoffrey Gilbert took home the homerun derby title.

Across the rivers, Waccamaw High School will host the Coastal Invitational tournament Feb. 28 through March 3. The tournament features eight Lower State teams, five of which made the postseason in 2018.
St. James was a game away from reaching the state championship series in 4A last season while Wando played in the Lower State tournament in 5A. Waccamaw and Aynor reached the 3A District tournament while Conway earned a bid to the 5A District tournament.
Pelion, Cheraw and Socastee will also participate in the tournament. Cheraw is ranked second in the South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association Poll
Last season, Waccamaw defeated Cheraw 11-0 to claim the Coastal Invitational championship trophy. Jaret Montenery was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
