According to School officials, all Georgetown County schools will be back to business as usual on Monday, September 9 after Hurricane Dorian.

As of Friday, September 6 all schools had power restored and there was no significant damage to facilities that would limit the school district in any way. It was noted that although schools were out for the week of Dorian, some staff were still working in various capacities. Pleasant Hill Elementary, for example, served as a shelter and staff assisted in making that happen.

You may recall a previous South Strand story that described the new eLearning program that was being introduced to the Georgetown County School District. The eLearning program is designed to allow students and teachers to interact and keep up with assignments in the event of school cancellation due to inclement weather. The program had not been fully implemented prior to Dorian’s arrival. As a result, it was not utilized. However, officials are doubtful any of the days will have to be made up at this point as there is a margin of forgiveness between authoritative bodies for cancelled school days, specifically when mandatory evacuations are part of the equation.

In addition to County Schools, Coastal Carolina will reopen on Sunday, September 8 while Horry-Georgetown Technical College will reopen on Monday.

"We understand that not all students may be able to get back to campus on Monday and can make accommodations for those needing more time for travel.  Students are asked to communicate these circumstances with faculty as soon as possible," said Nicole Hyman, Public Relations Director for HGTC. "Please note that the College will work with students to accommodate lost instructional time. Rest assured that HGTC faculty will coordinate with students to ensure all assignments and hours are completed within an acceptable timeframe.

"It’s also important to note that the College will run its process to drop student schedules for nonpayment on Wednesday (September 11) after close of business.  This will allow three business days for students to make final payment arrangements.  We are asking all students to check with Student Accounts to ensure classes have been financially secured."
