Raymond Newton won the special election for the open Georgetown County District 5 council seat Tuesday and will be sworn in tomorrow morning.
Newton defeated Thomas Alford 634-168 to fill the unexpired seat that belonged to Austin Beard who resigned in May.
District 5 runs from a point west of the city of Georgetown, over to Andrews and along the county line in a northeasterly direction, bordering Williamsburg County.
Beard stepped down, nearly four months after three groups produced documents showing he does not live in the district he represents, a violation of state and county election law. Despite public calls for his removal from council, Beard continued to participate in council meetings.
In March, the county elections board ruled Beard ineligible to vote in the county. He appealed the ruling, but later withdrew his appeal after announcing he would step down from council.
The term for the seat expires at the end of 2020.
