Georgetown County government has for the second year in a row received the highest form of recognition available in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting.

The county’s finance department was presented with the international Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. The award was presented by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for the county’s most recent comprehensive annual financial report.

“We hope that your example will encourage other government officials in their efforts to achieve and maintain an appropriate standard of excellence in financial reporting,” said Michele Mark Levine in a letter from the association announcing the award.

The report submitted by Georgertown Ccounty was judged to meet the high standards of the program, which includes demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report, according to the association.

Georgetown County Administrator Sel Hemingway said the county strives to be transparent in all the county’s operations and finances, and the county’s finance staff works hard to find ways to meet that goal.
