Lowcountry Preparatory School officials have planned in-person commencement exercises for their seniors. Head of School Scott Gibson III said he has been in close contact with South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA) Executive Director Spencer Jordan and indirectly with representatives of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) in planning the event that includes measures to safeguard the health of all attendees. “We took the plan to our Trustees who approved it. They expressed their satisfaction that we will be able to honor our seniors in the manner they deserve, namely in the company of their families and classmates, which is consistent with Governor McMaster’s latest guidance.”
Head of School Gibson noted commencement exercises are scheduled for May 27, 2020, as was the original plan at the outset of the academic year. The exercises will take place on campus, outdoors, beginning at 10:00 a.m. “Results of our survey of seniors and their parents made clear they wanted an actual event and not a virtual event.”
Upper School Director Abby Van Hoewyk stated, “Seniors all over the world have missed out on end-of-year activities like prom, senior day, athletic spring sporting events, and banquets. At least we can provide an in-person graduation ceremony to celebrate during this important time in our seniors’ academic careers.”
Attendance is limited with priority granted to the seniors and their families. Other safety measures include the availability of masks, gloves, and hand sanitizer. Seating will be consistent with social distancing guidelines.
