Captain Samuel V. Porter died at his residence yesterday and his death will be seriously regretted. Funeral services will take place today and will be well attended. All flags of the shipping in the harbor were at half mast in his honor.

We have been asked to call the attention of those in authority to the condition of things along the Merriman Road. The selling of liquor and the shooting of pistols on this road is simply terrible at night and it seems to be nobody’s business to try to put a stop to it. 75 Years Ago, 1944
Women of all ages turned out Tuesday to get a glimpse of movie star Tyrone Power, while he attempted to eat lunch at the Prince George Hotel. Lieutenant Power was here on official business and gave his autograph to several of those who besieged him before the others were shooed away by Mrs. T.T. Stewart and Mrs. J. H. Monte.
50 Years Ago, 1969
The Georgetown County School District has been given a year of grace to complete integration of its public schools. Elimination of the dual school system will not be ordered for the 1969 school year, but will be expected one year later.
25 Years Ago, 1994
Georgetown County residents may be 6 months away from having an Enhanced 911 Emergency System on line. County officials recently completed the long first phase – renaming roads and streets in the county.
