125 Years Ago, 1894

Nevada Joe gave an open-air exhibition on the street on Thursday afternoon. The exercises consisted of tight rope walking and feats of lifting, etc. Altogether the show is credible to Nevada Joe.

100 Years Ago, 1919

Georgetown tobacco market opened with about 40,000 to 50,000 pounds of the weed on the floor of the big warehouse. The warehouse was a lively scene as wagon after wagon, autos and trucks and even ox carts came in, and the novelty of the proceedings brought many of the people of the city out to see and hear. One of the features was the big fish fry, and there was a bountiful supply of eatables on hand for the farmers and their families and friends.

75 Years Ago, 1944

James Ervin Fulton Jr., paratroop infantry, was killed in action on June 6, according to a telegram received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Fulton of Pawleys Island, from the war department. Young Fulton attended school at Pawleys Island and Winyah High School... Seaman First Class Cletis Shoptaw was killed in action during the invasion in France. Young Shoptaw was employed by the International Paper Company in Georgetown before entering the amphibious Corps of the Navy. He was sent to England in March. His duty included landing troops.

50 Years Ago, 1969

The lunar landing of two American astronauts on the moon Sunday night was a gripping experience that left millions of viewers shaken and still unbelieving – or at least half convinced. The emotional impact of seeing two human beings walk in the powdery dust of a hitherto inaccessible and mysterious spheroid fell upon the old and the young alike.

25 Years Ago, 1994

Two sightings of UFOs in the night skies over Georgetown and Williamsburg counties have been reported to Andrews Police during the last two weeks. About two weeks ago, a man driving between 9 and 10 p.m. one evening on Old Morrisville Road in Williamsburg County, about 10 miles from Andrews, spotted two unidentified flying objects. The most recent report was made Friday at 9:50 p.m. by a man who saw a UFO hovering in the night sky while travelling on Highway 521 en route to Litchfield Beach.
