On July 28. the Warrior Run Disc Golf Course will host the inaugural Pawleys Island Open, a C-Tier disc golf tournament — which means members of the Professional Disc Golf Association can earn points for their participation.

Created in 2017, the Warrior Run Disc Golf Course is located at Stables Park on Pawleys Island. It is highlighted with 100 year-old Live Oaks and several ponds that offer water hazards on several of the holes.

The tournament is being hosted by the Myrtle Beach Disc Golf Club, a non-profit group of enthusiasts, amateurs and pros dedicated to promoting the sport. Martin “Tate” Jones is the Tournament Director and part of the volunteer group who designed and implemented the Warrior Run Disc Golf Course.

“The course offers moderately tight windows with low ceilings created by the canopies of the Live Oaks. The ponds are very much in play on holes two and seven; less so on holes three and four,” Jones said. “It does a great job of maximizing natural features and beauty in its flow and design.”

The Pawleys Island Open is the second disc golf tournament to be held at the course. The first was the Gator Am, a “Throw Pink Initiative Event” that was held last March and had a focus on breast cancer awareness and fund-raising.

There are seven divisions in which disc golfers can compete which include amateur, pro, women and several age-specific divisions. Registration is $40 and includes a “Players Pack” for amateurs that consists of a custom-stamped disc, custom t-shirt, galactic mini-disc, Innova dewfly towel and more. There will also be several closest-to-the-pin prizes, an ace pool and a raffle.

Registration is full but there are still opportunities to sponsor the event. Innova is the title sponsor beside the club as well as several other local businesses. Contact Dan Newquist at newquist.daniel@gmail.com for sponsorship information.
