The Georgetown County Family YMCA’s Wahoos swim team has been awarded Level 1 designation to be affiliated with the USA Swimming Association. Wahhos coach Coach Mary Bell Wall has also qualified as USA Level 3.
The Wahoos competed in their first USA Long Course Team Meet in Charleston last month in a regulation-size Olympic pool.
Top 10 finishers in individual events competing: John Grey Crosby, Michael Paglio and Emma Sullivan.
Top heat finishers were: Gracie Pifer, Ella Speir, Edwin Lopez, Chrissie Wall, Jonah Crosby, and Abigail Pagett.
Crosby and Wall train together and both set personal best times in the 100-meter fly at 1:27.00. Hannan Mackey and Sullivan finished within one second of each other in the 50-meter backstroke.
Wall said that the most difficult aspect for the kids was that many of them have never seen an Olympic-size pool much less swam in one.
The swimmers met Peter Vanderkaay, who captained the Team USA swim team in the 2012 London Olympics, winning a gold medal with Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.
