Georgetown County officially opened its two newest recreation facilities in Pawleys Island last week.
Retreat Park, which cost $1.8 million and features two 300-foot baseball fields, has already been hosting games. More fields may be built at the park in the future.
The Waccamaw Regional Recreation Center, which cost $4.4 million, will open May 6.
The new 26,000-square-foot center will host senior programs, sports such as basketball, karate and volleyball, rock climbing, aerobics, summer camps and much more.
The center will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays.
The center will initially only be open on weekends for special programs, although regular weekend hours could be scheduled in the future.
Both facilities were built with funds from the county’s Capital Improvement Plan.
New recreation facilities, and updates to old ones, help sell Georgetown County to business owners considering relocating here, said Wayne Gregory, the county’s director of economic development.
“Anything we can get that enhances our community helps me sell Georgetown County,” Gregory said. “We are serious about developing and improving in the future.”
County officials also broke ground on the new $1.5 million Murrells Inlet Community Center.
The 7,000-square-foot facility, which is being built next to the old community center, will house the Murrells Inlet Community Theater, a Magistrate’s Office, a Sheriff’s Office substation, and banquet facilities.
“It’s a wonderful place and venue for local residents,” Gregory said.
