Tired and worn, but happy.
That's a pretty good description of the Georgetown Dixie Debs and their coaches -- and the rest of the 28 teams in the South Carolina Dixie Softball tournament in Union.
For the fifth year in a row, the Georgetown Debs won the state championship. They'll be heading to Vancleave, Mississippi for the Dixie Debs World Series on Friday.
Players on the Dixie Debs team come from all four Georgetown County high schools -- Georgetown, Waccamaw, Andrews and Carvers Bay, as well as Johnsonville.
Coach Pat Wildes said he got home to Georgetown about 2:30 a.m. last Thursday.
Georgetown won two games the night before to clinch its state title.
In the first game at 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, Georgetown won over Pee Dee 8-2.
At 8 p.m., the Debs defeated Sumter in six innings by a score of 10-0.
Pitcher Ashley Czechner started both games. She was relieved by Taylor Poston in the first contest and pitched all six innings against Sumter.
5th in a row
"They were excited," Wildes said of the Georgetown team. "This is the fifth state championship in a row. That's got to be some kind of record."
Pee Dee win
Czechner got a home run in the first inning of the first game and she and Katie Lunsford were both two for three at bat.
In the 8 p.m. game Wednesday against Sumter, top hitters for Georgetown were Joanna Powell (2-4), Megan Strickland (2-4) and Kellie Howard (2-3).
"Sloan Welch pitched the whole game for Sumter," Wildes said.
"They held together for several innings. It was 0-0 to about the fourth inning, but we finally scored."
In the 4th, Georgetown made four runs and added another in the 5th inning. Then, in the 6th inning Georgetown got five more runs and the game ended with the 10-run "mercy" rule.
Wildes said the team will leave for the Debs World Series in Vancleave, Miss. on Friday morning and will drive all day.
Games will start on Saturday, July 31 and run through Wednesday, Aug. 4.
Coaches: Nelson Brown and Pat Wildes
Players: April Cantey, Kellie Howard, Taylor Headden, Whitney Baxley, Mary Ellen Morris, Ashley Brown, Ashley Czechner, Taylor Poston, Megan Strickland, Joanna Powell, Katie Lunsford, and Crystyn Neely.
