Andrews police chief fired (UPDATED)

  • Wednesday, October 17, 2012

Andrews Mayor Rodney Giles confirms insubordination was the reason the town’s police chief, Jennifer Flowers, was fired from her position on Tuesday.
Flowers said she was called into Giles’ office Tuesday afternoon and was terminated. She told the Georgetown Times Tuesday night insubordination was the reason she was given.
Giles also confirmed Wednesday the “insubordination” stems from the hiring of two police officers by Flowers.
The positions were budgeted, Giles said, but the individuals who were hired were not approved.
He said Andrews has a strong-mayor form of government and all hires are supposed to be approved by the mayor.
Giles said the decision to terminate Flowers was difficult.
“It’s always hard when you have to take disciplinary action against anybody,” Giles said.
Flowers, who has been the town’s chief since August, 2010, was at Andrews Town Hall Wednesday morning collecting her belongings.
Giles said Sgt. Verney Cumbee has been named interim police chief until a permanent hire can take place.
A town council meeting is expected to take place at 6 p.m. this evening. Although the police chief’s position is not on the agenda, there is a public comment period where speakers are given three minutes each to address council about any issue.
