New VA center opens in Georgetown

  • Wednesday, July 18, 2012

Veterans in Georgetown County now have a new place to find the services they need.
A ribbon cutting was held July 11 at the new home of the Georgetown County Veterans Affairs Office at 537 Lafayette Circle.
Georgetown County Administrator Sel Hemingway said the office ended up at its new location because of a “domino effect.”
The location is the former home of the American Red Cross.
Last year, Red Cross officials approached the county about moving to a new location.
At about the same time, the county’s Voter Registration Office on Hazard Street, which was sharing a building with the Veteran’s Affairs Office, was wanting to expand.
A deal was reached to move the Red Cross into a county-owned building onScreven Street and to move Veteran’s Affairs to the Red Cross facility.
“It was a win-win for everyone,” Hemingway said.
Natrenah Blackstock, director of the VA office, said she is “excited” about being in the new facility because more services can be offered with the additional space.
Commander Earl Rutledge of the Lowcountry Veterans Group said he is pleased with the atmosphere in the new facility.
“We have never had anything like this here. It is nice,” he said.
The facility is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday  through Friday.
