A Georgetown man who was found dead on a pathway near Georgetown County’s School District Office was killed by a gunshot, Coroner Kenny Johnson said Sunday.
Alfonso “Fonzo” Terrell Thomas, 25, of Duke Street was found by a woman and her 13 year old son as they were walking on the path between Church and Legion Streets early Thursday.
Johnson said an autopsy confirmed the cause of death as a single gunshot wound to the head.
He said more testing is being conducted to try to determine other details, such as how close the gun was to Thomas when it was fired.
Police Capt. Nelson Brown said the motive for shooting is unknown. Investigators have talked to may people hoping to get an answer to that question.
The path where Thomas was found is a heavily traveled walkway between the Georgetown Housing Authority and Church Street.
A body was found early Thursday by a woman and her 13-year-old son who were walking on a pathway next to the offices of the Georgetown County School District on Church Street.
And now, Georgetown police are looking for the person responsible for what could be the city’s first homicide since December 2009.
Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson identified the victim as 25-year-old Alfonso Terrell Thomas of Duke Street.
Police Capt. Nelson Brown said the body was found at about 7 a.m. next to the school district property on a path between Legion and Church Streets.
He said counseling services will be offered to the woman and child who made the discovery.
Johnson said a wound was found was on Thomas’ head, but an autopsy will be conducted at 9 a.m. today at the Medical University of South Carolina to determine how he died.
“It may be a gunshot wound, but I really can’t say until the autopsy is conducted,” Johnson said.
He said it appears Thomas had been on the pathway “for several hours but not all night.”
The motive for the death, Brown said, is unknown. Investigators are canvassing the area trying to talk to anyone who may have information that will help in the case.
He said Investigator Aaron Lynn has been assigned to lead the investigation.
Anyone who has any information that may help authorities find whoever is responsible is urged to call 545-4300 or our "Tip Line" at 545-4400.
This would be the third homicide in Georgetown County this year — and the second this month.
On August 18, Sean Edwards, 21, of New Haven, Conn., was gunned down in the parking lot of Club Isis in Pawleys Island.
James Earl Richardson Jr., 18, was found shot to death at the corner of Parkersville Road and Julian Rutledge Drive on May 25.
There was only one homicide in the county in 2011.
