Girls school changes hands

  • Wednesday, July 11, 2012

In August 2009 a girls-only private school opened in a renovated home at 1032 Front Street but was in danger of closing at the end of this past school year.
But, the school will continue to function — under a slightly different name and under new ownership.
Sara Frances Academy is now Sara Frances Christian Academy and is for girls in kindergarten through 3rd grade.
Kelly Murray of Georgetown founded the school three years ago and named it after her mother.
Loren Collins, who owns the facility in which the school is housed, heard that the school was closing and was told how bad the students, teachers and parents wanted it to remain open.
He told the Georgetown Times the school almost closed at the end of the 2010-11 school year but he “dropped the rent to near nothing” to help the doors stay open.
When learning in May the school would close, Collins said he met with parents and the teachers to hear their concerns.
“The teachers are dedicated. The students love it,” Collins said of his decision to keep the school running. “I did not want Georgetown to lose something so special.”
There are currently two teachers at the school with a combined 50 years of experience in education. One of them — Wallis Taylor — is also serving as principal, Collins said Thursday.
Collins said he decided to make the name change so people would know exactly the type of school it is.
“It never was advertised as a Christian school. I don’t think the churches in the area knew it was a Christian academy,” he said.
He said he and his wife, Marilyn, will hold periodic lectures on the topic of nutrition as Mrs. Collins holds a doctorate in health and nutrition.
Along with the required curriculum. The school also offers classes in Spanish and music.
