Georgetown City firefighters worked to extinguish a house fire as the heat index surpassed 100 degrees Thursday afternoon.
The fire, at the house at 411 North Merriman Road, was reported at about 2:22 p.m. The fire started in a bedroom of the home belonging to Pearlie Greene.
Fire Chief Joey Tanner said Greene smelled smoke and her son went to the bedroom to investigate.
He saw the flames and everyone made it out of the house without injury.
Tanner said firefighters “made an aggressive attack” and were able to extinguish the fire before it leveled the house or spread to a car under a carport.
The cause of the fire was still being investigated late Thursday. Because of the fire, Merriman Road was closed to traffic until firefighters cleared the scene.
