Cyclists in the area to help raise money for clean water for Africa

  • Sunday, July 29, 2012

Ride Well Tour, a cycling campaign to raise money and awareness for clean water in Africa, will be in Pawleys Island this Sunday.
The money collected supports Blood: Water Mission, raising funds for the provision of clean blood and clean water in sub-Saharan Africa.
The mission was started in 2005 by the Contemporary Christian group Jars of Clay.
Sub-Saharan Africans must hike several miles just for a drink of water. The average distance that women and children in developing countries walk to collect water per day is 4 miles.
The average weight that they carry on their head is approximately 44 pounds. Over 40 billion work hours are lost every year in Africa to the need of fetching clean drinking water.
In order to better understand their plight, a water walk will be held in Pawleys Island on Sunday. It will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the parking lot of Pawleys Island Community Church.
Participants are asked to bring milk jugs or other containers that will be filled with water and carried one mile to experience the daily life of a Sub-Saharan African.
There is a suggested donation of $15.
