Honoring local heroes, especially men and women in police and fire service, the Dead Dog Saloon in Murrells Inlet will host its 13th annual benefit on Sept. 11, the anniversary of terrorist attacks that shocked the nation in 2001.
“It will be a day when the whole community comes together for fellowship and a great cause,” said Charlie Campbell, owner of the restaurant.
“Since the benefit started, we have raised more than $160,000 for our men and women in police and fire service.”
Doors will open at noon and there will be a free food buffet, live and silent auctions, and 10 live bands, each playing on the hour starting at 1 p.m.
All food vendors donate the food and the bands donate their time.
The bands are:
• Chasing Revelry at 1 p.m.
• Bil Krauss at 2 p.m.
• Folkem Duo at 3 p.m.
• Lowcountry Soul at 4 p.m.
• The Grocery Store Gentlemen at 5 p.m.
• The Winchesters at 6 p.m.
• The Mullets at 7 p.m.
• Painted Man at 8 p.m.
• Bullfrog at 9 p.m.
• Paperwork at 10 p.m.
The event will also feature a live TV broadcast with Carolina and Company from noon to 1 p.m., and a Marsh Walk march before the formal ceremony at 2 p.m. with a Rolling Thunder color guard and representatives from police and fire service. Donations will be graciously accepted throughout the day and night.
John Campbell, manager of the restaurant, said Dead Dog Saloon adds a donation of its proceeds from bar sales on top of all the other donations.
“Every year, our goal is to beat the prior year,” John Campbell said. “Last year we raised $18,000, so this year we would like to see it in the $20,000 range.”
All proceeds benefit the Horry/Georgetown counties Fire and Life Safety Expo and the Georgetown Sheriff’s Office “Shop with Santa” Program and Rolling Thunder, a veteran bikers organization.
New this year is a Myrtle Beach Harley Davidson motorcycle ride with a couple of hundred bikes arriving at about 4 p.m., John Campbell said.
The proceeds from that run will be added to donations.
The Dead Dog Saloon is also hosting its third annual Charity Golf Tournament on Tuesday, Sept. 9, to add more proceeds to the total amount raised.
