Georgetown sweeps past Andrews

Georgetown High School’s volleyball team opened the season sweeping Andrews on Aug. 26.

“It feels great,” said Georgetown head coach Jamie Walker.

Game one was tied at 2-2 when Georgetown’s Paigelyn Adams served the Lady Bulldogs to a 7-2 lead.

“We were confident,” Adams said. “We felt really good warming up.”

After an Andrews timeout, Adams’ serving extended the lead to 11-2.

Georgetown outscored Andrews 14-8 down the stretch to take game one 25-10.

The Lady Bulldogs came out strong in game two, building 5-0 and 7-2 leads.

Once again Adams took over with her serving, extending the Georgetown lead to 12-2.

The teams traded points to 16-6, and then Georgetown extended its lead to 20-6 behind the serving of Shyneshia Miller.

Andrews scored the next five points behind the serving of Carli McCants to cut the lead to 20-12, but Georgetown went on a 5-2 run behind the serving of Krista Wendell to win 25-14.

Wendell continued her strong serving to give Georgetown a quick 6-0 lead in game three. Wendell was 9-for-11 serving in the match.

The teams traded points, but Georgetown continued to extend its lead until at 16-9, Andrews called timeout.

With the score 18-11, Andrews made a run behind the serving of McCants to cut the lead to 18-15, the closest the game had been since the score was 6-3.

But the Lady Bulldogs pulled away in the end and Blake Walker served out the 25-17 win, giving Georgetown the match.

Cannon had four kills, two digs and an ace for Georgetown.

“It feels good [to beat Andrews], because they always have something to say about us,” Cannon said. “It feels good to get them out.”

“They love it, the girls love it,” Walker said. “It’s like bragging rights.”

Also for Georgetown, Miller had four kills, three digs and one block; Alyssa Kozma had three kills, two digs and two blocks; Summer Blakeley had four digs; and Cortney Peters had three digs.
