Chris Sokoloski/South Strand News Andrews High’s Malorey Morris returns a shot against Williamsburg Academy on Aug. 25. The Lady Yellow Jackets were swept in the season opener.

Andrews High School’s volleyball team opened the season being swept by Williamsburg Academy on Aug. 26.

“I’m still seeing some good things, I’m real positive about the season,” said Andrews coach Kathy Stewart. “There’s always things you’ve got to work on.”

Game one was tied 4-4 before Williamsburg went on a 14-4 run, causing Stewart to call timeout to stop the momentum.

Williamsburg then built a 21-12 lead before a Brooks Cribb shot found an open spot to cut the lead to 21-13.

Andrews scored the next four points to make the score 21-17, but Williamsburg then closed out the game for the 25-7 win.

Game two remained close, with Williamsburg only leading by two or three points until it built a 19-14 lead. Williamsburg held Andrews off down the stretch for the 25-19 win.

Andrews started fast in game three, jumping out to a 5-1 lead before Williamsburg battled back to tie the score at 8-8. Williamsburg then went on a 10-6 run to build an 18-14 lead.

The teams traded the next seven points to 21-18, the last time either team led the game by more than two points.

During the rest of the game, the score was tied eight times.

Williamsburg had the first chance to win at 24-23, but a Zanavyia Deas kill tied the score at 25-25.

Andrews had two chances to win the game at 25-24 and 28-27, and held off three match points by Williamsburg.

With the score 30-29, a Williamsburg shot that was close to the end line was ruled in, ending game three and the match.

Stewart said the Yellow Jackets waited too long to get started.

“We’ve got to get some intensity going into the first game. We’re waiting too late to get energized.”

Cribb agreed.

“I think we gave it our all in the end. I think we need to start better in the next game, but I think that pumps us up for the next game the way the game ended. I think that will give us a good start.”

Cribb was 10-for-11 serving during the match. Carli McCants was 9-for-11 and Malorey Morris was 8-for-11.

Deas came off the bench and was 3-for-4 on attacks and had two blocks.

Andrews participated in a preseason tournament at Carvers Bay on Aug. 23, and Stewart was disappointed in her team’s effort overall.

“We won a game against Carvers Bay, it was 27-25, it was the best game I’ve seen since I’ve coached at Andrews High School,” she said. “But the rest of the tournament was probably the worst I’ve seen. So you’ve got to take the good with the bad.”

Andrews players and coaches didn’t have long to think about the match. The Yellow Jackets were back in action Aug. 26 at Georgetown and will host Carvers Bay on Aug. 28.
