The late Tommy Smith Sr., who won more than 250 football games and three state championships at Howard High School, has been elected to the inaugural class of the South Carolina Football Coaches Hall of Fame.

The football stadium at Georgetown High School is named after him.

Smith was born in Georgia, but grew up in New Jersey. After a stint in the military, Smith attended Allen University in Columbia. Later he coached football, basketball and track for 36 years in Georgetown County.

Smith was elected to the S.C. Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame in 2011.

The other members of the inaugural S.C. Football Coaches Hall of Fame are: current Summerville coach John McKissick; Julius “Pinky” Babb of Greenwood; Paul Chapman of Chesterfield and Dillon; Bob Rankin of Dillon, Berkeley, Johnsonville and Marion; Willie Richardson of Clinton; Doug Shaw of Myrtle Beach; Joseph Turbeville of Winnsboro, Spring Valley and Irmo; and Willie Varner of Woodruff.

Combined, the nine men have 311 years of experience as head football coaches, have won 2,733 games and 46 state championships.
