Lady Sharks Tennis prepare for new season

Just two weeks into practice and the ladies of St. James High School tennis team prepare for challenge matches.

Challenge matches begin Aug. 18 and end Aug. 26. These matches establish a tennis ladder. Players are ranked based on skill, not age.

“We don’t care about what grade they are in. It’s all about how well they can play,” said head coach Patrick Lee Cannon. “Once you establish a ladder, doesn’t mean that’s where you are the whole year.”

Challenge matches also help new players get a feel for what to expect for the upcoming season.

These matches are not the only thing to help players stay motivated this season.

“Motivationally, since several are new, you have to take the wins and losses out of it right now,” Cannon tells the new team members. “You can’t get defeated.”

This season is one of the first times Cannon has seen this many new players.

Sixty to 70 percent of the players are new to the team.

As of right now, there are seven varsity players and five junior varsity.
