Giles attends Palmetto Girls State

Commander Ed Jayroe and Auxiliary Unit President Olga Miles proudly announce that Raven Giles of Andrews represented American Legion Post 69 at the recent Palmetto Girls State held at Presbyterian College.

Giles is a senior at Andrews High School and is a Lieutenant Junior Grade, Supply Officer, with the school’s Navy Junior ROTC unit. Giles also plays volleyball and is a Spanish Club member.

At Girls State campers learns about democracy,citizenship, leadership and elect their own city, county and state governments.

They have two political parties, the Nationalists and Federalists. Giles served as the city attorney for Wright County at Girls State.

Giles states it was an honor to attend Girls State and meet Governor Haley along with touring the State Capitol and having lunch at the “horseshoe” at the University of South Carolina in Columbia.

Giles is the daughter of Andrews Mayor Rodney Giles and Barbara Giles.

She hopes to follow her mother’s footsteps into nursing while attending ROTC at the University of South Carolina. She states she is also inspired by her aunt Yvette Giles, formerly of Andrews, who is retired from the United States Air Force.

Any eligible veteran who is interested in joining Andrews American Legion can contact Commander Ed Jayroe at 843-325-7740. Post meetings are the first Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at 1067 N. Morgan Ave. in Andrews.
