Huntington to become accessible

  • Thursday, August 14, 2014

Anita Crone/ South Strand News Karen Korszeniewski, president of the Friends of Huntington Beach State Park, chats with Brenda Magers, the park director, near where two concrete ADA-compliant campsites will be installed at the park’s camping area.

Huntington Beach State Park is on the verge of adding two paved campsites near the bathroom that will allow physically disabled people to take advantage of camping in the park.

In addition, the park will install 5-foot wide sidewalks.

Work is expected to begin soon with a formal dedication tentatively scheduled for Oct. 13.

The additions are expected to cost $20,000, with money provided by the Friends of Huntington Beach State Park.

Huntington Beach, the most visited state park in the South Carolina system, will become the second state park to provide ADA-accessible sites in the camping area.

The work will be done by BR Brick Pavers LLC, under the direction of Bob Terlewsky, who has been working with the Friends and park staff to ensure the new sites meet the needs of prospective campers as well as fit in with the park, said Karen Korszeniewski, the president of the Friends.

The Friends have been working in conjunction with park leadership.

Already the Friends have provided a handicapped wheelchair capable of traversing the sandy beaches and a new boardwalk.
