A man was killed and his wife has been charged with his death after she shot him Friday night at their home in the Pleasant Hill area.

Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson said an autopsy is being conducted on 60-year-old Fermiond Smith who lived at 1572 Ray Road.

According to the Sheriff's Office, his wife – 58-year-old Sonia Gay Smith – called 911 around 9:30 p.m. Friday saying she had shot her husband.

“Upon arrival, deputies found the victim lying on the floor in the residence unresponsive. Deputies made contact with (Sonia) Smith who was also in the residence and took her into custody. Information gathered from the investigation at this time is the shooting was domestic related,” a Sheriff's Office press release states.

Johnson said Mr. Smith was shot once in the face. The autopsy is being conducted to try to determine how close Sonia Smith was to her husband when the shot was fired.

Smith has been transported to the Georgetown County Detention Center where she will be formally charged with murder, the Sheriff's Office says.
