Another director steps down from museum post

  • Friday, August 8, 2014

Debby Summey, the interim director of the Georgetown County Museum, has resigned her position with the museum.

Summey confirmed she resigned her position the evening of Aug. 5. The resignation is effective Saturday, Aug. 9.

She declined to comment on the reason why.

“I love this museum, and I am leaving with a heavy heart.”

Summey’s departure is fifth in a string of resignations from the museum. She was hired in June to be the “interim general manager” in the wake of the resignation of the former director and assistant director, Jill Santopiertro and Susan Sawyer.

Since then two members of the board of directors, Pam Toemmes and Dick Riley, have also stepped down.

“I love [the museum], I started it back in 2003. I want it to be around for 100 years, and I think it can be. One hundred years from now I’d like to see it flourishing, she said.

“I hope they can find a permanent director who is as passionate about the museum as I am.”

The Georgetown Times was unable to reach Board of Directors President Rene King for comment. Board Treasurer Jan Lane said she could not comment on the resignation because she “didn’t know about that.”

Board Secretary Mary Boyd said the resignation was “nothing I can comment on at this time. But when it comes to the museum, we have never skipped a beat, we are open, and we will continue to be open.

“We are preparing for some wonderful events that will be coming up shortly, so we are moving along.”
