Sandy Island Preserve to have fall hunts

  • Thursday, August 7, 2014

For a fourth year, The Nature Conservancy and Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge will team up to host two big game hunts on Sandy Island Preserve.

The Nature Conservancy will host an archery-only quota hunt on the upland portion of the Preserve during the fall hunting season.

Hunt participants will be randomly selected for a no-cost permit, and must apply no later than Sept. 5.

Hunters may apply in tandem for one of five pair permits or for one of 20 individual permits.

If selected, participants will be mailed regulations and a special permit to hunt deer and hogs on the Preserve from Oct. 1 through Nov. 30, (excluding Sundays).

Hunting will occur on the Preserve only within designated hunting areas described within the permit map and hunters must comply with rules set forth by this new hunt program. No small game, migratory birds, or turkey hunts will be allowed. Hunters are asked to wear orange and be cognizant and aware of the presence of other recreationalists that may be hiking, birding, or boating on the Preserve.

For additional information and to apply for this archery-only quota hunt, please contact The Nature Conservancy, Attn: Nicole Allan, Phone: 843-937-8807 X10, E-mail: nallan@tnc.org. Please include name, address, phone number, email address, state hunt license number, and if applying for the pair or individual permit.

In addition to the archery-only hunt on the Sandy Island Preserve, the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge will be offering a combined modern weapon, archery and muzzleloader deer and hog hunt on the wetland areas being managed by the Refuge.

Refuge hunt dates and regulations will apply.

Refuge hunt permits are free of charge and all hunters are required to have a signed copy of the permit in possession at all times when hunting.
