The YMCA/USA Wahoos ended their busy summer season by attending the YMCA Summer Championship Meet in Pickens and the USA Long Course State Meet in Columbia this month.
Despite summer camps and family vacations, the Wahoos were still able to send 19 swimmers to Pickens and nine to Columbia.
10 YMCA teams from across the state competed in Pickens at the championship meet. Placing in the top 10 overall in their perspective age group: Finn Long (first), John Grey Crosby (second), Hurley Cribb (third), Anna Marie Lopez (fourth), Michael Paglio (fourth), and Chrissie Wall (seventh).
Placing in the top four in one or more individual events were: Kelsey Campbell, Catherine Condon, Briar Long, Edwin Lopez, and Hunter Shull.
Other swimmers earning personal best times were: Junah Long, Alex Pelham, Rowan Pelham, Mia Paglio, Reynolds Tiller and Will Tiller.
State qualifiers for the 2014 SC-CA LSC Long Course Championship Meet were: John Grey Crosby, Edwin Lopez, Michael Paglio, and Emma Sullivan.
The meet also offered finale events for all swimmers and the following Wahoos took part in Finales: Hurley Cribb, Anna Margaret Loftus, Covey Loftus, Benjamin Richards, and Chrissie Wall.
Emma Sullivan had a great meet finishing ninth in the 800 free final and sixth in the 1,500 free final in her age group.
Hurley Cribb was a major stand out with finales as he cut time in all eight of his events and placed first in the 200 fly, second in the 200 breast, third in the 100 fly, and fourth overall in the 100 breast.
Edwin Lopez earned personal best times in his two state cut events and his finale events. He placed 11th in the 50 breast, 13th in the 100 breast, 10 in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 back.
John Grey Crosby finished 10th in the 200 individual medley finale, 17th in the 200 back finale, 17th in the 100 back finale, and third in his 100 free finale.
Michael Paglio finished 13th in the 50 back finale, 14th in the 50 fly finale, 18th in the 200 back finale, and third in the 100 breastroke finale.
Covey Loftus made a major breakthrough with combining stroke technique and speed and placed second in his 100 breast finale and placed first in almost all of his individual heats. He cut a combined time of over 50 seconds in his events.
Anna Margaret Loftus had an amazing meet cutting a combined time of over 60 seconds in her events.
Mia Paglio, Benjamin Richards, and Chrissie Wall earned personal best times in their finale events.
The Wahoos will take a few weeks off and return to the water on Aug. 25 to continue practicing for the fall/winter season.
