Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge has the highest density of nesting Swallow-tailed Kites in South Carolina and is the northernmost documented nesting site for this species.
Join Coastal Expeditions on Sat., Aug. 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a birding expedition aboard Island Cat as they seek out this icon of the southern swamp.
During the summers, the open skies along the river corridors within Waccamaw NWR allow bird watchers to watch this bird break from a graceful soar into predatory acrobatics.
The tour continues on Sandy Island Preserve with a naturalist-led walk to see the wildlife of this protected island before heading back to the Visitorís Center at Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge.
The tour departs from Waccamaw NWR, 21424 North Fraser St., Georgetown.
