Passing judgment

  • Wednesday, July 16, 2014

We find it disheartening to read the comments some news stories elicit on Facebook. Most recently, but by no means the first time, the comments beneath the breaking news about an officer-involved shooting.

The only information released from authorities was that there had been an officer-involved shooting resulting in the death of a 37-year-old woman wielding a knife.

The woman allegedly may have suffered from mental illness.

Within minutes, the comments began.

Many claimed to know how the officer should have handled the situation.

Others defended the officer and tried to explain how officers are trained.

The comments quickly devolved into name-calling and other divisive snippets.

To our knowledge, none of those who commented were inside that apartment.

Consequently, none of the people commenting had any idea what happened or what should or shouldn’t have happened.

We urge our readers to refrain from such behavior. We suggest you to wait until investigations are complete and all the information is released.

We understand it is human nature to be drawn to tragedies such as these. But it is foolish and presumptuous to assume we know more than those involved and each other.

And more than that, it is hurtful…to all involved.

We can do better.
