Althea Garrison

Althea Floyd Garrison, 90, formerly of Georgetown, died Sat, July 12, 2014, in Columbia. She will be buried on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Lake City Memorial Park, Lake City. A memorial service to honor her life will be held at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown on a day and time in August to be determined. The family will receive friends there prior to the service at the church.

Mrs. Garrison, wife of Joseph Edward Ray Garrison, was born on Jan. 23, 1924, in Scranton. She was the daughter of the late Marcus O’Shay and Mattie Hutchinson Floyd.

She is survived by her sons, Joseph Edward (Ed) Garrison of Lugoff, and William O’Shay (Shay) Garrison and daughter-in-law, Patricia of Lexington; a granddaughter, Courtney Ann; and grandson, Christopher O’Shay, both of Lexington. Other survivors include numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Luther O’Neal Floyd.

Mrs. Garrison was a 1946 graduate of Winthrop College and taught in elementary schools in Florence County, McIntosh County, GA and Georgetown County, where she retired after teaching third grade at Maryville Elementary School for more than 15 years.

She was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church and faithful participant in the Francis Asbury Sunday School Class. She was also a devoted volunteer with Helping Hands of Georgetown.

Mrs. Garrison spent most of her young adult life enthusiastically taking on the roles of Cub Scout Den mother, Pack leader, Little League mom, Sunday School teacher, grade parent, PTA and Vacation Bible School leaders for her sons before resuming her teaching career.

She was an enthusiastic fan and follower of Clemson Tiger and Georgia Bulldog football and enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting, gardening and cooking.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorials may be made in Mrs. Garrison’s memory to Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church or Helping Hands of Georgetown.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the staffs of Morningside Assisted Living in Georgetown, Wildewood Downs Long-term Skilled Nursing facility in Columbia and Palmetto Health Hospice for the love and kindness provided to Mrs. Garrison.

Bertha Gertig

Bertha Marie Starkey Gertig, 80, wife of Roy Fred Gertig, passed away on Mon., July 14, 2014 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Born on Dec. 25, 1933, in White Plains, NY, she was a daughter of the late Irvin Starkey and the late Adelaide Colligan Starkey. Mrs. Gertig was a member of the Women’s Auxiliary VFW 6444, American Legion Post 178 and the co-founder of the Elks Lodge #900 in Pawleys Island.

Survivors include her husband of Georgetown; two sons, Roy S. Gertig (Kay) of Bellevue, NE and Erich Gertig of Georgetown; five grandchildren, Steven, Christopher, Erich, Scott and Amy.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Graham Funeral Home.

Earnest Holmes

Linen-Knox Funeral Home announces the death of Mr. Earnest Lee Holmes, age 70, of the Plantersville community of Georgetown, who died on July 7 at MUSC Hospital in Charleston. Mr. Holmes is the son of the late Carlis Holmes and the late Josephine Holmes, both of the Plantersville Community of Georgetown.

Survivors include his son and two sisters; one son, Earnest L. Holmes Jr. of Seneca; two sisters, Linda Holmes of the Plantersville community and Geneva Hayward of Alexandria, VA; a host of loving uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held for Mr. Holmes on Tues., July 15 at 1 p.m. at Linen-Knox Funeral Home Chapel on 1632 Emanuel St. in Georgetown with Rev. Willie E. Holmes presiding.

Sara Prosser

Sara Jo Hartfield Prosser, 80, widow of Boyd O. Prosser, passed away on Sun., July 13, 2014 at her home.

Born on Dec. 9, 1933, in Florence, she was a daughter of the late Henry Hartfield and the late Clydia Cooper Hartfield. Mrs. Prosser was a member of First Assembly of God. She enjoyed reading, cooking and spending time with her family.

Survivors include a son, John E. Prosser (Charles Hill) of Garden City; four grandchildren, Brian Prosser (Heather) of Mt. Pleasant, Tracy Elliott (Juston Johnson) of Georgetown, Candace Bridges (Joshua) of Georgetown and Rosalyn Self of Georgetown; eight great grandchildren, Brier Prosser, Nevelin Prosser, Katelynn Price, Madison Price, Hannah Bridges, Joshua Bridges, Jr., Lillian Bridges and Kaylee Bridges; one sister, Grace Filyah of Florence; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby O. Prosser; one sister, Mary Lou Lambert; five brothers, Willie Hartfield, Billy Hartfield, John Hartfield, Eugene Hartfield and Mayo Hartfield.

Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wed., July 16, 2014 at First Assembly of God. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Graham Funeral Home.

Charles Welch

Charles Reynolds Welch age 83, of Highway 17 business, Murrells Inlet died Monday, July 14, 2014 at his farm.

Mr. Welch was born Oct. 31, 1930 in Greensboro, NC, a son of the late Charlie M. Welch and Essie Purvis Welch. He was a member of Belin Memorial United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, riding on his tractor and growing tomatoes.

Mr. Welch is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jo Ann Clardy Welch; a son, Charles Glenn Welch and his wife Colleen of Murrells Inlet; a daughter, Jan Welch Ruffalo and her husband Charlie of Rock Hill; 2 grandsons, Alex Ruffalo and Madison Welch; 2 granddaughters, Morgan Welch and Ciara Ruffalo; a brother, Farrell Lee Welch and wife Myrlean of Robbins, NC; a sister, Mary Welch Comer and her husband Murphy of Aiken.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thurs., July 17, 2014 at Belin Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service in the church sanctuary.
