Robert Jennings

A certified public accountant from Danville, Va. died after being found floating in the ocean at Pawleys Island Monday afternoon.

Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson identified the man as 68-year-old Robert Jennings of Danville, Va. Jennings was pulled from the ocean in the area of the 700 block of Springs Ave. and was rushed to Waccamaw Community Hospital. Johnson was called to the hospital around 4:20 p.m.

An autopsy conducted Tuesday confirmed Jennings died as a result of drowning. Johnson said his death has been ruled accidental.

Midway Fire and Rescue responded to the scene just after 3:30 pm, Midway Asst. Chief Jim Crawford said.

Jennings had been found face down in the water, Crawford said.

When rescue crews arrived, bystanders were performing CPR on the man, who was unresponsive, Crawford said.

Midway crews took over life-saving efforts and transported the man to Waccamaw Hospital. Autopsy results were not available by press time.

Jennings was the owner of Robert L. Jennings, CPA in Danville. His website says he has owned the business since 1987.

According to WSET-TV 13 in Lynchburg, Va., Jennings' family learned of his death when his brother, Stuart Jennings, called his cell phone. The phone was answered by a nurse at Waccamaw Hospital who told him his brother had drowned.
