The Danny Dawson Memorial award 2014 was recently presented to Benjamin A. Wilkins an honor graduate of Georgetown High School.
The son of Rev. and Mrs. Steve Wilkins, Wilkins will be attending Presbyterian College in Clinton majoring in international studies with the intent of teaching on the college-level in the future.
Wilkins is recipient of a $500 gift toward tuition to the college of his choice and an award plaque.
Having distinguished himself with academic achievement Wilkins participated in varsity tennis for four years, earning All-Region honors all four years serving as captain for two years.
He is a member of the National Honor Society and served on student council. A member of NJROTC as company commander he succeeded in a program to increase freshman retention after years prior when the drop rate was over 50 percent.
The Danny Dawson Memorial Award has been in existence since 1971 when the first award was presented by the Georgetown Jaycees who honored Danny Dawson’s memory following his sudden death from a brief illness. Dawson was a well-known young businessman in Georgetown.
The chapter disbanded some years ago, however Dawson’s family continues to present the award.
