This week we celebrate our nation’s independence. “Independence” may be the best word to capture the greatness of the United States of America.
The quest for independence inspired our forefathers to risk life itself to sail across an uncharted ocean. That same independent spirit enabled those brave pilgrims to survive in an alien land, converting a wilderness into a civilized country, expanding from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
Independent entrepreneurs developed businesses and entire industries, created capital, built factories, established schools and colleges, fostered religious freedom, and the result is the most powerful and progressive nation in the world, “the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
While we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th, we also celebrate the critical importance of independent merchants throughout the week of July 1 to 7.
The Georgetown Business Association in collaboration with the American Independent Business Alliance has launched a campaign called Independents Week to encourage Georgetown to celebrate our independent merchants and urge our residents and visitors to shop local.
A proclamation passed by both the City Council and County Council highlights the vital and vibrant role independent merchants play:
Independent businesses help preserve the uniqueness of our community and give us a sense of place;
Independently-owned businesses give back to our community in goods, services, time and talent;
The health of Georgetown’s economy depends on our support of businesses owned by our friends and neighbors; and
Independent business owners and employees enrich community members’ shopping experiences with their knowledge & passion.
In proclaiming Independents Week 2014, we acknowledge that the ability to choose the direction of Georgetown (the City and the County) lies within each of us.
Celebrating Independence Day is a reminder of our need to support our local merchants all year long.
This week especially, we salute our locally owned independent businesses that are integral to the unique flavor of Georgetown and honor their efforts to make Georgetown, South Carolina the place we love to live and work.
