One man is dead and five others were rushed to the hospital following a crash involving two vehicles that occurred at approximately 8 p.m. Thursday in Murrells Inlet.
S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Bob Berres confirms the two vehicle accident occurred at the southern intersection of Highway 17 Bypass and Highway 17 Business. Berres said the driver of a Chrysler 300 was driving south and was trying to cross onto Highway 17 Business when the collision with a Chevy Trailblazer took place.
The impact caused the Chrysler to overturn. The driver of that vehicle was killed and the four passengers inside that vehicle were taken to the hospital.
The driver of the Trailblazer was alone at the time of the crash and was also hospitalized.
Georgetown County Deputy Coroner Chase Ridgeway identified the man who was killed as 50-year-old Richard Weldon of Illinois. Some of the victims were initially entrapped but were freed once emergency crews arrived on the scene.
Ambulances from Midway Fire Rescue, Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire and Horry County as well as a medical helicopter responded to transport victims. The condition of the survivors is unknown.
The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Highway Patrol.
