Two things signal the start of summer on Waccamaw Neck: the Pawleys Island Fourth of July Parade and the Friends of the Waccamaw Library’s annual book sale.

Now in its 24th year, the annual sale helps the Friends fund children’s programs at the library.

This year will be the last time the sale is held in Berly Hall at St. Paul’s Waccamaw United Methodist Church. With The Library Center - Waccamaw slated to open in December, there will be plenty of room for the sale at the new facility next year.

Thousands of books are at the church waiting to be displayed. Friends members will start setting up on July 7.

Visitors to the book sale can check out the progress of the new library as they drive down St. Paul Place.

As has been a trend the past few years, there are fewer new releases to be had at the sale. The proliferation of e-readers means people are purchasing fewer books.

But there is still a large selection of older titles, and softcover trade books, to be had.

“We still have favorite authors,” said Roz Breit, who oversees the sale for the Friends. “If you’re looking to start a new author it’s a great place.”

There will also be a wide selection of DVDs and CDs for sale.

Silent auction items this year include: a 1936 second printing of “Gone With the Wind,” plus a 75th anniversary DVD box set; autographed copies of “Coming Through: Voices of a South Carolina Gullah Community from WPA Oral Histories” and “Heaven is a Beautiful Place,” by Genevieve “Sister” Peterkin; and a set of wine tasting books.

Jane Spillane, widow of author Mickey Spillane, will be at the sale on July 11 from 10 a.m. to noon autographing copies of her book, “My Life With Mickey.”

The first night of the book sale, July 10, is open to members of the Friends only. Membership renewals and payments for new memberships will be taken at the door. Hours are 6 to 8 p.m.

The sale is open to general public on July 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and July 12 from 9 a.m. to noon.

St. Paul’s Waccamaw UMC is off Willbrook Boulevard in Litchfield, behind Midway Fire Rescue.
