Road signs recognize Williamsburg Academy’s state win

Major highways leading into Kingstree are sporting new signs. The Williamsburg Academy Stallions Football team made local history when they won the 2013 South Carolina Independent School Association Football Class A State Championship. It is the first state football championship for the academy. In recognition of their achievement SC Department of Transportation signs have been erected along Hwy. 52 north, Hwy. 527, Hwy. 261 and Hwy. 377 (Martin Luther King Avenue).

Lieutenant Governor John Yancey McGill was on hand for the presentation. I can tell you many a parent is smiling today and the coaches. How proud we are of them and the players, said McGill. A state championship - history at its best. Congratulations Williamsburg County and congratulations Williamsburg Academy.

Kingstree Mayor Ricky Burrows echoed the lieutenant governor. Everybody at the Town of Kingstree is so very happy that the academy won a state championship, said Burrows. Its been a long time since weve had one and wed like to congratulate the team and the coaches.

Stallion Head Football Coach Ken Kellahan sought the advice of the lieutenant governor before moving forward. We asked him if he thought it needed to be done and he jumped on it, with the help of Mayor Ricky Burrows and Kingstree Town Manager Dan Wells it happened. said the second-year coach. Were very proud of it and I think the boys are very excited and I know our school and our community are very excited about it. Kellahan is a 1995 graduate of Williamsburg Academy and former assistant coach at his alma mater The Citadel.
