Pawleys Island tops Georgetown

Pawleys Island’s Junior American Legion team scored four runs in its last at-bat to beat Georgetown 6-3 on June 19.

Georgetown jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Drew Williams singled to score Tyler Baxley and Michael Moore, and Will Bellune scored on a wild pitch.

In the third inning, Pawleys Island’s Alex Nash singled and scored on two errors.

Pawleys Island loaded the bases in the fourth when David Geney doubled, and Wes Lee and Tucker Perry singled, and then Geney scored on a fielder’s choice by Nash.

Trailing 3-2 going into the fifth inning, Pawleys Island’s Brady Gantt singled and Conner Eckard reached on an error. Back-to-back singles by Levi Almond and Will Golden scored Gantt and Eckard, and Almond scored on an error. Golden scored on a wild pitch to make the score 6-3.

Georgetown’s Matthew Owens came on in relief and got the final three outs.

“We swung it pretty good,” said Pawleys Island coach Jeff Gregory. “The pitching I was pretty happy with. It was pretty consistent.”

For Pawleys Island, Almond went 2-for-3 with one run and Golden went 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI.

Eckard gave up three runs and five walks and struck out two in 4-2/3 innings. Miller Brinson came on in relief and got a strikeout.

For Georgetown, Williams went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Baxley went 1-for-3 with a run, and Brett Howard went 1-for-2 with a walk. Corey Ward and Alex Hughes also had hits.

Pawleys Island then beat Georgetown 6-2 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Grant Blaylock had an RBI and scored a run; Wes Lee had an RBI; Gantt and Golden had singles; Alex Altman had a walk; Jake Atkins scored two runs; and Daniel Rourk and Ethan Chastain scored runs.

Almond started and struck out five.

For Georgetown, Chase Funderburk got the final two outs of the fourth inning with the bases loaded.

Georgetown bounced back with a 6-0 win over Berkeley on June 23.

Hughes pitched a complete game, allowing only one hit and striking out three.

Seth Poston went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI; Ward went 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs; and Pearson Adams went 2-for-3.

Berkeley had beaten Georgetown 17-0 on June 10.

Pawleys Island’s final regular season games are a doubleheader at home against Andrews on June 30 and a game at Socastee on July 2.

Georgetown’s final regular season game is June 27 against Conway at Mike Johnson Park.
