Diane Beck

Diane Cook Beck, age 72 of Andrews, the widow of Franklin “Frank” Charles Beck, went home to be with the Lord on June 14, 2014 at Agape Assisted Living of Conway.

Mrs. Beck was born the daughter of Guyon Cook and Alberta Elliott Cook on Oct. 28,1941 in Charleston.

She leaves behind: five children, Charles “Chuck” (Lorraine) Furtner, Randy (Holly) Furtner, Sharon (Chuck) Ward, Robert (Amy) Justice, and Tara (Jason) Newton; ten grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by: her parents; her husband, and two brothers.

A graveside service will be 10:30 a.m., Fri., June 20, 2014 at Andrews Memorial Cemetery directed by the Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home.

David Drayton

David H. Drayton, 87, former educator, of Georgetown, died on June 17, 2014 while a patient at South Fulton Medical Center, Atlanta, GA.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Sat., June 21, 2014 at Bethel A.M.E. Church with burial following at the church cemetery.

Mr. Drayton was born on August 20, 1926 to the marital union of David H. Drayton and Virginia Cruel Drayton. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters, Mable McKnight and Maudeste Searles.

He graduated from Howard High School, was awarded the Bachelor of Arts Degree from Tuskegee Institute, Tuskegee, AL and received the Master of Arts Degree from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI.

His marriage to the former Dorthula Pinckney was blessed with the births and rearing of five children.

Mr. Drayton was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, where he served on the Trustee Board, the Chancel and Men’s Choir, and was a charter member of Bethel Apartments.

After having served 21 years as the last principal of historic Howard High School, he accepted the position of vice principal of the newly formed Georgetown High School. In 1987 he formerly retired as an employee in the education system. However, his work in the community and for the benefit of children and their parents continued well into the next two decades.

Exemplary was his work to treat the AIDS epidemic, his commitment to the Georgetown Housing Authority Board of Commissioners, “Roots to Reconciliation” (the visit of the Amistad’s replica), the Committee for African American History Observances and the Bethel Apartments, Inc.

Awards an citations included receipt of the Order of the Palmetto an honorary Doctor of Humanities from Coastal Carolina University and the establishment of the David H. Drayton Heritage executed by the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include: his wife, Dorthula Drayton, Georgetown; five children: David H. Drayton, Jr., and Felita D. Johnson, both of East Point, GA, Andrew Morgan Drayton and Kevin Drayton both of Rockhill and Delicia Worrill of Savanah, GA.

Kerry Ray

Kerry Lloyd Ray, 50, passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.

Born on April 15, 1964, in Georgetown, he was a son of the late Lloyd Ray and Janet Bellflower Ray Lambert. Kerry enjoyed watching NASCAR and going fishing.

Survivors include his mother of Georgetown; one daughter, LeeAnn Ray of Cincinnati, OH; two brothers, Ronny Ray of Pawleys Island and Barry “Randy” Ray of Conway; one aunt, Barbara Wallace of Georgetown; one niece, Schyler Ray; and three nephews, Justin Ray, Brandon Ray and Christopher Ray.

Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014 at Sampit Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Eddie Knight officiating. Burial will follow in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Graham Funeral Home.

Sonny Rice

Linen-Knox Funeral Home announces the funeral services for Mr. Sonny Rice, age 70, of Long Island, NY, who died on Sat., June 14, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre in Nassau, NY. Mr. Rice is the husband of Tehayma Rice of Long Island, NY and the son of the late Dock Rice and the late Flossie Rice of the Dunbar Community of Georgetown. Two brothers, Hezekiah Rice and Ellis Rice and three sisters, Daisy Priest, Pearline Rice and Rose Rice Gloster all preceded him in death.

Funeral services for Mr. Rice will be held on Sat., June 21, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church in the Dunbar community of Georgetown, with the Rev. Dr. Eddie Gamble Jr., officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The remains will lie in state in the sanctuary of the church from 9 a.m. until the hour of service. Viewing will be held on Fri., 20, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Linen-Knox Funeral Home Chapel on 1632 Emanuel St. in Georgetown.

Mr. Rice is survived by his loving wife, 11 children and eight siblings. Wife, Tehayma Rice of Long Island, NY; eight daughters, Lora Holmes of Long Island, NY, Dorine Blanco and Joann Mackenzie both of Hartford, CT, Robin Jackson of NJ, Lawanda Rice, Sharon Scullark, Janee Duncan, Janelle Daley all of Columbia; four sisters, Elnora McCray of Hemingway, Annie Mae Rice-Cuttino of the Maryville section of Georgetown and Rebecca Rice-Briggs of Augusta, GA and Zearline Rice Holmes of the Dunbar community of Georgetown; four brothers, Henry Rice of Baltimore, MD, David Rice of Columbia, Herman Rice of the Dunbar community of Georgetown and Wyman Rice of Queens, NY; and 23 grandchildren and a host of loving uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.

John Sherald Jr.

John Louis Sherald Jr., “Sonny”, 83, of Georgetown died on June 16, 2014 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m .on Mon., June 23, 2014 at Bethel A.M.E. Church, with burial following at the church cemetery.

Mr. Sherald was born on June 30, 1930 in Georgetown, a son of John L. Sherald, Sr. and Ethel Buttone Sherald. He was educated in the public school system of Georgetown and graduated from Howard High School. Further study was done at A&T State University, Greensboro, NC.

Prior to having earned an honorable discharge he served his country ably in the U.S. Army.

Having returned to Georgetown he worked at Winyah Generating Plant and retired in 1993 after several years of employment.

As a devoted member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, he served on the Trustee Board, the Chancel and Men’s Choir, the Senior Usher Board, and was a leader of Class No.#18.

Mr. Sherald was married to the former Vera Harper on March 1, 1954.

He is survived by: his wife, Vera Sherald of Georgetown; two sons, Bruce Sherald of Pickerington, OH and Rodney Sherald of Pawleys Island; four daughters, Dr. Johnelle Sherald of Blythewood, Vernelle Allen, Shawn Williams and. Marcell Gilliard all of Georgetown; three sisters, Claudia Wright, Willie Lou Humes and Joann Ford, all of Georgetown. Funeral services are entrusted to Wilds Funeral Home, LLC.
