Goggans friends with developers?

  • Friday, May 30, 2014

To the Editor:

The pre-election campaign finance report filed by Georgetown County Council candidate Steve Goggans on May 23 paints a very clear picture of his backers.

Of the $17,096 that Goggans has reported raising, $12,175 or over 70 percent is from development interests: developers, realtors, a realtor PAC, attorneys, appraisers, and architects.

Why would all of these development interests pour money into Steve Goggans ’campaign? They see an opportunity to put into office a fellow developer, who can be counted on to be a friend.

Goggans performance as the chairman of the county Architectural Review Board shows just how friendly he can be to developers. When the big-box developer who was going to bring Walmart to Pawleys Island sought a special exemption from the appearance rules, Goggans voted to exempt them from the rules.

Goggans and the other members of the ARB were effectively fired by County Council in disgust after the vote.

Unlike Steve Goggans, we can count on Bob Anderson to protect our quality of life by fighting big-box stores and ensuring all developers are held to the rules.
