The real Republican

  • Friday, May 30, 2014

To the Editor:

I have read with amusement the attacks by supporters of Bob Anderson, regarding my” being Republican enough.” My first observation is that this frenzy suggests my opposition is flustered, if not panicked. Also, not all Republicans make attendance at party meetings their primary social outlet.

I have been a member of the national Republican Party for more than twenty years, have donated to many Republicans, including Nickii Haley, been appointed by the late Governor Carroll Campbell to the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Relocation Commission, and my Brother in law is the Republican Chairman of the Committee for Education and Public works in the SC House. I have also surveyed various campaign literature, including Nickii Haley and Lindsay Graham, and it is interesting how infrequently the word “Republican” is mentioned in their materials. I also doubt that an appearance before a group of democrats, who are interested in local issues, makes one a liberal; however, I doubt that any of the above will likely pursuade those who already have their minds made up, as to what constitutes a “Real” Republican “.

I can say that as a small businessman, I have witnessed the impact of high taxes (at all levels of government), and the impact that regulation has on investment and job creation. Consequently, I believe that government should be kept lean, and efficient… in fact, I believe that government should be run much like a business. I am not supportive of excessive government debt, as it will impact upon our ability to make needed future investments in services and infrastructure, and it will saddle future generations with the burdens of our excess. These are a few of the factors that cause me to be a Republican and fiscal conservative.

I am running for Georgetown County Council because our Community is at a crossroads. I believe that we cannot continue to be careless in our planning, thoughtless in our decision making and cavalier in our willingness to listen, or we will find ourselves increasingly in a community we no longer want to live, work, or play. Our quality of life, our property values, will decline. Community friendly streets, sign ordinances, drainage, sidewalks, and unwillingness to listen are not Republican, Democrat, or Independent Issues…..they are Community Issues!

If elected I will do all I can to preserve the quality for the Waccamaw Neck and I will bring my background in business, planning, architecture, and community affairs to serve all of the citizens of our Community. I would greatly appreciate your vote in the Republican Primary on June 10.

Steve Goggans

Pawleys Island
