Mu Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. presents debutantes

The Mu Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. commenced its 18th Debutante Program on Feb. 8.

Eight young ladies will make their debut to society on Saturday, May 31 at 7 p.m. at the Winyah Auditorium, 1200 Highmarket St.

The debutantes participated in a variety of activities designed to enhance their cultural awareness, encourage community involvement, and to promote high scholastic goals.

These activities included participating in the Georgetown County Black History Parade and attending a career symposium, retreat and mini workshop.

They enjoyed “An Evening with Sarah Reese,” the acclaimed Metropolitan Opera soprano, and attended a new production from Aunt Pearlie Sue and the Gullah Kinfolk, the “Wax Museum” at Coastal Carolina University, in Conway.

The debutantes saluted their mothers at a special mother/daughter appreciation luncheon. The young ladies will compete for the title of 2014 Debutante Queen.

Debutantes will receive awards and other gifts to help further their education.

Career interest: pediatrician

Tiffani DeNetta McCray

Daughter of Fredrick and Denetta McCray

Senior at Georgetown High School

Talent: singing and poetry

Church affiliation: Trinity A.M.E. Church

Career interest: teacher – early childhood

Daijah Fatisha McLaughlin

Daughter of Jason Collins and Fatisha McLaughlin

Junior at West Florence High School

Talent: marching band flag girl, singing and praise dance

Church affiliation: Savannah Grove Baptist Church

Career interest: physical therapist and registered nurse

Mariah Whitney Reed

Daughter of Matthew and Donna Reed

Senior at Waccamaw High School

Talent: singing, dancing, poetry and plays, competitive cheering and gymnastics

Church affiliation: Georgetown Family Worship Center

Career Interest: musical theater, performing arts and cosmetology

Talent: modeling, stepping, track and writing

Career interest: traveling registered nurse
