To the Editor:
Number of players: two or more.
Playing field: center lane on Highway 17.
Equipment: any car, truck or motorcycle.
Object of the game: enter and / or exit the center lane without a mishap to your vehicle or you.
Winners have their car, truck, motorcycle and themselves in one piece and alive.
Losers have their car, truck, motorcycle and themselves totaled or dead.
Whether you are a long time resident or a summer visitor, at one time or another you have “gambled” in the center lane in Pawleys Island. Everyone takes their chances entering and exiting the center lane.
I have experienced two incidents recently in the center lane on Highway 17. The first was when I entering the center lane to make a left turn into Hotel Drive to get to the Fresh Market and saw another car speeding in the center lane toward me and stopped abruptly less than one car length in front of me to make a left turn into Jetty Drive. My second incident was again at the same entrance to Hotel Drive. This time a van waiting to exit from Jetty Drive, sped out across Highway 17 and pulled in front of my car just as I was about to make a left turn.
So far I have been “lucky” and have my car in one piece and I am alive to write about it. Others are not so lucky when a firetruck, an ambulance and police cars are on the scene of a serious and sometimes deadly accident on Highway 17.
As you may recall, the area of highway mentioned above is the same section not too long ago where an individual riding a motorcycle was pulling out from Hotel Drive and got killed.
Remember the next time you enter or exit the current center lane, you are gambling. You might win or you might lose!
Winning is the goal so everyone can continue to have fun shopping, dining and being at the beaches rather than losing and have family and friends visiting you during calling hours. As residents of Pawleys Island we can work together to make traveling Highway 17 safe and attractive for local residents and for all summer visitors who enjoy the area.
Be a Pawleys Island tourism ambassador to promote the area and support the construction and beautification of the medians.
Please help all of our residents and the many visitors have memories that are positive about Pawleys Island and can live to tell others about our area which was rated by Coastal Living Magazine as one of the world’s best beaches.
Gambling in the current center lane in Pawleys Island is your choice. Hope you continue your winning streak and not lose someday!
