Linda Davis, age 50, of Lake City, SC
Mary Elizabeth Fielder Ferdon, age 82, of Georgetown died Fri., May 16, 2014, at Tidelands Community Hospice House.
Mrs. Ferdon was born in Spartanburg on Sept. 27, 1931, a daughter of the late Thomas Franklin Fielder and Elvira Jackson Fielder.
She graduated from Spartanburg High School and Limestone College, Cum Laude in 1952.
While at Limestone, Mrs. Ferdon was a member of the Honor Society, Who’s Who, and a Senior Superlative.
She served as May Queen and was on both the Student and Legislative Councils.
Mrs. Ferdon was a charter member of Herbert Memorial United Methodist Church, where she served as a trustee, on the Alter Guild, and was a member of the United Methodist Women.
She was a founding member of both the Georgetown Watercolor Society and the Georgetown County Cultural Council, and was an active member of the South Carolina Watercolor Society for many years.
Mrs. Ferdon enjoyed fishing at North Inlet with her husband and working in her yard.
Surviving are her husband, Richard James Ferdon Jr. of Georgetown, whom she married on May 30, 1953 in First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg; three sons, Richard Fielder Ferdon (Joyce) and James H. Ferdon (Kelli), both of Georgetown, and Robert Jackson Ferdon of Conway; two daughters, Mary Beth Ferdon Kornahrens (Glenn) and Anne Ferdon Moore, both of Pawleys Island; six grandchildren, Richie Ferdon, Rangeley Ferdon Laney (Edward), Steve Kornahrens, Maggie Kornahrens O’Briant, Jackson Ferdon, and Lizzie Moore; and two great-grandchildren, Mikey and Danny O’Briant.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ferdon was predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor Craig Phillips and Rose Lake Fielder.
Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. on Sun., May 18, 2014, at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church.
Officiating was the Rev. Marie Knuckles. Inurnment will be private in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.
The family received friends prior to the service at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church Family Life Center from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Edward S. “Ed” Lazarz, age 77, of Murrells Inlet passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at his residence.
A Celebration of Life Mass was held at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, May 19, 2014 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Garden City.
Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.

Ellis Eugene “Gene” Leigh, age 67, husband of Judy Skipper Leigh, passed away on Fri., May 16, 2014 at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Born on Sept. 12, 1946, in Conway, he was the son of the late Eddie Ellis Leigh and the late Margaret Sullivan Leigh.
Mr. Leigh was a member of First Assembly of God where he served as former Sunday School superintendent, a former deacon and many other positions within the church.
He enjoyed working, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.
Mr. Leigh was the owner of Gene’s Lawn Service Inc.
Survivors include his wife of Georgetown; a daughter, Jeanie (Rod) Duncan of Andrews; and a son, Timmy (Charlene) Leigh of Georgetown; four grandchildren, Daniel Duncan, Dillon Duncan, Caleb Ledford and Andrew Leigh; two sisters, Janice (Bryan) Jordan of Conway and Pat (Fritz) Gibson of Myrtle Beach.
Mr. Leigh was predeceased by a son, Kevin Eugene Leigh.
Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. on Tues., May 20, 2014 at First Assembly of God with Rev. Clifford Coursey, Rev. Dave Hoskins, Rev. Tommy Cox and Rev. Wayne Powell officiating. Entombment was held at Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at First Assembly of God.

Penelope Parker Peterson died on Friday, May 16, 2014 surrounded by family at her house in Flat Rock, NC. Born in Columbia, SC, she was the daughter of James Rose Parker and Sarah “Sally” Clarke DeSaussure.
She graduated from Converse College and attended graduate school at the University of North Carolina.
She was predeceased by her husband, Auguste Bartholdi Peterson, Jr., and her beloved dog, Puck.
She is survived by her son, A. Bart Peterson, III, and his wife, Ellen, of Lake Mary, FL and by her daughter, Sallie Peterson White and husband, Daniel, of Greenville, SC, granddaughters, Bentley Parker White of Charleston, SC and Sarah DeSaussure White of Boulder, CO, and sisters, Sarah Parker Lumpkin and Martha Parker Allison and husband, Fitz, all of Georgetown, SC.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at noon at St. John in the Wilderness, 1905 Greenville Highway, Flat Rock, NC, with the Right Reverend C. FitzSimons Allison, Reverend John A. Morton, and Reverend Deacon Joyce Beschta officiating.
Burial followed the service in the churchyard.

Willie Elwood Powell, age 75, of Andrews, loving husband and father, made his journey from Earth to Heaven on Wed., May 14, 2014 at his home surrounded by family.
Mr. Powell was born the son of Willard and Sadie Britt Powell on Nov. 22, 1938.
He was devoted to his God, family, church, and community. He loved the outdoors and was a business owner in the timber and construction industry for over 50 years.
Mr. Powell is survived by his best friend and wife of 55 years, Harriett Walters Powell.
He was the father of Melinda (Gary) Nettles, Terri (Mark) Smith, Gregg (Mandy) Powell, Sharon (Frankie) Thornell, and Tammie (Brad) Davis.
Mr. Powell’s family was blessed with 12 grandchildren, Ginnifer Nettles (Kevin) Johnson, Garrick Nettles, Bradley Davis, Toni Smith, Lori Smith, Pete Davis, Brooke Thornell, Faith Lambert, Breanna Thornell, Mikayla Davis, Shaune Powell, and Tyler Powell.
He is also survived by two brothers; three sisters; and numerous beloved in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Amedisys Hospice, 500 Pamplico Highway, Suite D, Florence, SC 29505.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. on Fri., May 16, 2014 at Happy Home FWB Church, 56 Big Dam Swamp Dr., Andrews, SC.

Karen Van Vlake
Karen Lou Oyler Van Vlake, 75, wife of O. Richard Van Vlake, passed away on Monday, May 19, 2014 at her home.
Born on April 23, 1939, in Richwood, WV, she was a daughter of the late Harry Oyler and the late Marjorie Lou Higginbotham Oyler. Mrs. Van Vlake enjoyed many things in life to include traveling to Las Vegas and Cherokee, crocheting, shopping, cooking and listening to Barry Manilow. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be missed by all who loved her.
Survivors include her husband of Myrtle Beach; four children, Allison Van Vlake of Georgetown, Lisa Van Vlake Rowe of Pawleys Island, Denise Van Vlake Judy of Conway, and Eric Van Vlake of Myrtle Beach; six grandchildren, Angel Whalen (Brian) of Myrtle Beach, Kristen Rowe of Pawleys Island, Megan Judy of Charlotte, NC, Erica Judy of Myrtle Beach, Chris Davis of Myrtle Beach and Lauren Edwards of Georgetown; two great grandchildren, Gabriel and Layla of Myrtle Beach; two sisters, Ann Robertson of Pawleys Island and Sherry Taylor (Eric) of Georgetown; two brothers, James “Teedie” Oyler (Marcheta) of Eufaula, AL and Johnny Oyler (Rhonda) of Savannah, GA; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 in the Graham Funeral Home Chapel.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
