Summer Enrichment Program

Students in grades K-five, along with rising 6th graders are welcomed to participate in this exciting, educational and fun program that will enable students to sharpen their academic skills through academic enrichment activities, engaging and enjoyable projects, various workshops, and in-house field studies and field trips. Surf The Earth Surf Camp

Surf The Earth Surf Camp is great for kids of all ages. CPR certified camp instructors focus on primary surfing fundamentals, building inner confidence and teaching water safety. Ages six to 15, beginner to intermediate. Camps will be held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Second Street Beach Acces on Pawleys Island. Summer Enrichment Program

Optimism Preventive Servicesm Inc. is accepting applications for their summer enrichment program. Participants will gain meaningful opportunities that will enhance youth's skills in leadership, independence, peer relationships, self-esteem, adventure and exploration.

The Pre-K through eighth grade program will include: summer math attack, reading pool, creative explosion, recreation, swimming, weekly field trips, precise etiquette, musiclicious, theme parties, Green Horizon Club and Kids Engerizing Club.

Program begins June 9 and will end Aug. 14. Hours of operations will be 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Aerospace Education Classes

There are 2 sessions of space camp being held at Waccamaw Elementary this summer.

The first is a two day workshop for students who have completed fourth to sixth grade. It will be July 9 - 10 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Students will discover and learn about Orion's features, innovations and design capabilities of the future. They will learn how innovations developed in space influence life on earth. Students will learn more about where America is going next, including the International Space Station, the moon, near Earth Asteroids and Mars. Students will investigate and experiment with scientific principles relating to space exploration. Classes will include hands-on experiments in topics such as robotics, rocketry, weather, layers of the atmosphere, and space suit technology as it relates to health care, satellites, and hydroponics. Cost: $90 which includes tuition and all rocket materials.

The second class is designed for students who have completed second or third grade.

Students will learn about living and working in Space, where astronauts sleep, how they eat, exercise, and work and spend free time. They will design and build space stations in cooperative groups using recycled materials and participate in activities involving EVA assimilations, hands-on science experiments dealing with microgravity, weightlessness, and astronaut foods.

The South Carolina Maritime Museum's Youth Sailing Camp

Children eight to 14 years of age can register to attend weekly, half-day summer sailing campsorganized by the SC Maritime Museum's Youth Sailing Program. There are 18 sessions planned for June and July. Morning sessions will be held Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Afternoon sessions will be held Monday through Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. The sailing camps will take place at the SC Maritime Museum, 729 Front St., Georgetown. Registration is first come, first-served. The fee is $200 per camper and includes a US Sailing's “Learn Sailing Right! Beginner Sailing” course book, a skills log book, and a T-shirt. Museum members will receive a 10 percent discount for children or grandchildren.

Instruction will take place in the SC Maritime Museum, in the park beside the museum and on the water. Sailboats will put in at the City docks beside the museum. There will be up to 8 campers per session. Fred Hoelscher, a certified US Sailing Small Boat Level 1Sailing Instructor, will head up this year's instructional team. The team includes experienced and lifelong sailors Dave Lowe, Mary McAlister and Lee Talbot along with junior counselors from the Winyah Bay Sailing Club.

Young sailors will learn how to sail Optimist Prams, a small, extremely stable sailboat designed especially for teaching young people between the ages of 8 and 15 to sail.

The SC Youth Sailing Program has a fleet of 12 wooden Opti ‘s that were built by volunteers and funded by community sponsors.
