Georgetown police were called to Helena Street in Maryville late Wednesday night because an alligator was roaming the neighborhood.

When officers arrived, what they saw was not a typical gator but an 11-foot creature that could cause severe injuries or worse to humans and animals.

Georgetown Police Capt. Nelson Brown said the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources was called to the scene and they, along with police, had to fight for more than three hours as they tried to take custody of the gator. Brown said two catch poles were broken during the process.

Eventually, the gator was captured and it had to be “put down” by DNR.

DNR officials say gators over 6-feet in length are very hard to relocate which is why it was killed after it was taken away.
