‘Really not a Republican’

To the Editor:

Steve Goggans has been running a campaign ad that says: “No matter your party affiliation … Vote June 10th…”

Goggans is running for the Republican nomination for county council, but is doing his best to encourage Democrats to vote for him in the Republican primary and refuses to use the word “Republican” in his ad to describe himself.

It seems to me if Goggans wants the support of liberals and refuses to even acknowledge his Republican Party affiliation; he’s really not a Republican and should have run as a Democrat.

It’s clear that Goggans does not support the state Republican Party platform, which states about primary elections: “We believe political parties have the right to choose their nominees; therefore, we support primaries that are open only to registered voters of that political party.”

The term RINO, Republican in Name Only, is used to describe candidates or elected officials who really aren’t Republicans based on their position on the issues, but who proudly wear the name because the Republican brand helps them at election time.

In Goggans’ case, he can’t even qualify as a RINO because he won’t even take the Republican name. Effectively, he has disavowed the political party for which he is seeking nomination for elective office under.

Where in the world is the Georgetown County Republican Party on this?
