Registration for the fall season of Upward Soccer is now open.
Sponsored by First Baptist Church and Screven Baptist Church, leagues are available for boys and girls who will be four years old by Sept. 1, through rising sixth graders. The season begins in
August and runs through the end of October.
The cost is $50 per child and includes a reversible jersey, socks, water bottle, car magnet, individual awards after each practice and game, Scripture poster, and a end-of-the-season award.
There is a 50 percent discount for the second child per immediate family.
Registration forms are being distributed in local school and are available at First Baptist, 219 Cleland St., Georgetown, and at Screven Baptist Church, 2221 South Island Rd., Georgetown.
Parents may also register their children online at www.upward.org.
Practices begin the week of August 17 (the same week school starts) on Mondays,
Tuesdays, and Thursdays at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. for one hour per week.
Children will practice on the same day at the same hour each week.
Games will be Saturday mornings, starting Sept. 6 and running through Oct. 25. Games are completed by noon.
All practices and games will be at Screven Baptist.
Upward Sports seeks to provide “the best sports experience for every child” with an objective evaluation for each child and systematic assignment of teams to help achieve balance of abilities. Furthermore, practices are design to promote self-esteem and individual skill improvement and the game substitution system allows every child to start at least one game during the season while affording equal playing time. In other words, Upwards offers “play with purpose.”
In order to create the most balanced teams possible, each child is required to go through a simple, objective evaluation process. The first of these will be offered on Ma 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at First Baptist.
Children will be sized for their uniform, then go through six simple skills and drills stations.
Other evaluations sessions will be held at First Baptist on July 26, 9 a.m. to noon; Aug. 2, 9 a.m. to noon; and Aug. 4-7, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
“Last year, we had over 150 children who played soccer and had an outstanding season. We hope to have at least that many again this fall,” said Jay Holmes, minister of music at First Baptist and member of the church’s Upward Steering Committee. “We have lots of fun and the parents really appreciate the value and the organization of the program.”
